Switzerland is popular for many things like the Swiss Alps, the Swiss guards and Roger Federer. It’s also one of the most developed country in the world. Their public transport is impressive. Part of traveling is buying unique items from the country you visit or bringing something home for loved ones. If you have the chance to visit this wonderful country, I’m sure this has crossed your mind. So, what to buy in Switzerland? Below are the items that I recommend.
WHAT TO BUY IN SWITZERLAND
1. SWISS CHOCOLATES
Swiss chocolates are chocolates produced in Switzerland. They are known for the high quality of their products. Famous Swiss chocolate brands include Toblerone, Lindt, Frey, Cailler and Faverger to name a few. If you are in Geneva and go inside shopping centers like Manor or Coop, they have huge sections that are purely dedicated to selling chocolates. There are also stand alone stores like Laederach which is pictured above. They sell various chocolates which are usually weighed. I also went once to the Frey Chocolate factory and they have a very nice visitor center with various chocolate displays and information regarding the process of making the chocolate. They also naturally have a big store where you can buy their products. Swiss chocolates are in my opinion a must on what to buy in Switzerland.
2. SWISS WATCHES
If I mention a brand of a world class watch, nine times out of ten it is made in Switzerland. 95% of Swiss watches are in the luxury category. The likes of Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Longines, Patek Philippe, Tissot, Rado and TAG Heuer are very expensive. The popular and quite known brand in the more affordable category is Swatch. They are fun watches with classic and quirky designs. Tissot can also be affordable when it goes on sale. I’ve seen them at 50% off. There is a Patek Philippe museum in Geneva that you can visit and if I remember it right, the entry free is 5 Swiss francs. It’s a good place to see the history and workmanship that goes into those watches.
3. SWISS ARMY KNIVES
I have one and a lot of people have them. They are handy and quite practical. I think this is a good and affordable option to buy for people. It also does not take a lot of weigh and room in your luggage. It also comes in various options. There are a lot of Victorinox stores all over Switzerland so they would be easy to find. There is also a store in Geneva where you can buy them and they engrave the Swiss army knife you buy at their store for free up to 8 letters. The store is near the big Post Office.
4. SWISS CHEESE
Admittedly not as popular as its French counterparts but Swiss cheese has 450 varieties. Most cheese are made from cow’s milk. The popular ones are Emmentaler, Gruyere, and Raclette. If you want the authentic Swiss experience in the winter, it’s good to try the fondue and raclette. It’s a very Swiss thing to eat. This is a good option on what to buy in Switzerland for a foodie friend.
5. SWISS COWBELLS
If you’ve seen cows in Switzerland, you will see that they are distinct with their cowbells on their neck. They also make that adorable bell sound when they move around. Of course there are tiny versions of them as souvenirs.
