From Vienna airport to Vienna Central station (Wien Hauptbanhof) is relatively easy. You have a few options which are: combination of train and subway, the bus, taxi, driving or getting an uber. We opted for the train and subway which is the most affordable and convenient for us. As you exit customs, you can see directions to the train.
VIENNA AIRPORT TO VIENNA CENTRAL STATION
TRAIN & SUBWAY – 26 mins, 4 euros
BUS – 45 mins, 7 euros
TAXI – 23 mins, 40-50 euros
DRIVING – 23 mins, 5 euros for gas
UBER – 23 mins, 29 euros
We chose the TRAIN & SUBWAY so this is our route:
Flughafen Wien (CAT), change for Wien Mitte-LandstraBe Bf (U3)
Once you are at the Train Station at the airport, you will need a ticket. There are ticket machines before you go down the escalators to the train. They look like the picture below. They have language options so it’s easier to understand. Vienna city is Zone 1 and it costs 2.20 euro per ride. You can also input how many tickets you need to make it easier. Once you have chosen your ticket, you will be given options on how to pay. You can pay with a card or cash in smaller bills like 5 and 10 euros and coins.
There is also a timetable listed before you go down the escalators to the train. I think they only have 4 tracks so at least it is not very confusing. So with this schedule, you have to take the 07:06 CAT on platform 3 and sections D-F. If you miss that, you can also take the 07:36 one on the same platform.
The ride took 16 mins to Wien Mitte-LandstraBe Bf. There it was a bit confusing to catch the next train. I’m just glad we took the correct one and it looked something like below. Just remember the U3. We reached Wien Hauptbanhof after 6 stops.
The Vienna station is huge! There are many stores, groceries, coffee shops and food stalls in this station. It also has access to the metro. It is very convenient to stay close by especially if you are catching another train after a few days. 🙂
