Bia Mara in Antwerp is a fish and chips restaurant located on Maaldestraat near the Cathedral and the municipal hall. You can locate the restaurant on a small alley if you go from the Cathedral to the Municipal hall, you will be sure to pass it. I discovered this place through a friend who invited me to go for lunch here. I’ve been to the restaurant twice. Once with a friend and the second time with my mom when she was here visiting me.
THE ATMOSPHERE AT BIA MARA
The restaurant is a good size. It contains about 13-15 tables and some of them joined together. The industrial chic look of the restaurant welcome you. I like the patterned tiles by the wall. The industrial light fixture sets the mood. Bia Mara is located in an old building so the ceilings are really high. I noticed that they also have a private dining space behind the steep stairs. The bar and kitchen are located at the back of the restaurant. Upstairs on the second floor, you will find the restroom and you have to be careful with the stairs but it’s expected of an old building. I find the restroom sufficient and clean.
THE FOOD AT BIA MARA
This is their menu. It’s not a lot which is nice. My boyfriend always says that a good restaurant especially of this size does not have a lot of things in their menu which means that food is always fresh because they only have a few things on inventory. They also have Fish of the day which is written on the board by the wall. Aside from fish, they also have chicken and squid on the menu. On my second visit, we were told that squid is not available so it’s not always on the menu. You can also check Bia Mara’s menu online here. The prices are reasonable. You should budget about 15 euros a person and that includes drinks.
The first time I went, I had their Lemon & Basil Tempura with Seaweed Salted Chips & Homemade Garlic Truffle for €12. The serving is generous for a girl like me. It was really nice. I liked the Homemade Garlic Truffle sauce of the chips. My friend had the Classic Panko Fish with Seaweed Salted Chips & Homemade Tartar for €12 which is pictured at the beginning of this post. If I had to choose between the two, I would go for the Classic Panko Fish.
MY SECOND VISIT AT BIA MARA ANTWERP
On my second visit with my Mom, this is what we ordered. Our bill came to 28 euros since we ordered two meals and two drinks.
She had the classic panko. I wanted to try something new and I ordered the Fish Tacos and It was most noteworthy, really delicious! The Fish Tacos also came with a side of fries. This is not on their regular menu since it was listed on the Lunch Specials. I would certainly go back for these yummy fish tacos.
For drinks, I tried their Raspberry and Lemon drink. I like that it was not very sweet. It just had a hint of sweetness.
I have always gone here for lunch. Hence, I don’t know what it’s like or if it’s any different during dinner. I enjoyed the food here. Otherwise, I would not have gone back. In conclusion, if you would like a simple satisfying bite and a respite from all the walking, this is well recommended. They have free wifi as well so you can update your friends about your travels.
